The work pictured here evokes spring light: Amidst plum blossoms that are already in full bloom, a man carries a well bucket, and two birds are seen flying into the sky on the other side of the mountain. Somei Yuki (1875–1957) learned Japanese and Western painting at the Tokyo Fine Arts School (today’s Tokyo University of the Arts) and successively developed new painting styles by incorporating Western painting and composition techniques into Japanese painting.
