ちょっとしたメモ

先日のセミナーでも質問されていたが、ダブリン・コアでアクセシビリティ関連活動を行っているのはDCMI Accessibility Working Groupだ。このWGのページには、代替コンテンツとメタデータついての興味深い記述がある。文字に相当する内容を画像で表現している場合は、dc:typeの値は"Text"となり、dc:formatで"image"であることを示すという。こうすることで、エージェントが情報のジャンル（type）とフォーマットの食い違いを認識し、代替コンテンツを探すことができるようになるというわけだ。

For example, some content may be meant to be read, but be presented as an image. This happens often with mathematical symbols, for instance. In this case, the content should be marked as type=text and format=image so the mismatch can be identified. Applications can then look for content where type and format match.

Alternative Content: warning about genre vs format

type、formatという用語だけを見ていると、どう使い分けるか迷ったりするのだが、上記のようなケースを考えると分かりやすいのではないだろうか。Dublin Coreでのdc:typeの定義は The nature or genre of the content of the resource、一方dc:formatの定義は The physical or digital manifestation of the resource となっている。つまりtypeは「内容」に関するもの、formatは「物理的な表現形態」に関するものということだ。

この例はOpen Issueのセクションに記述されているので、代替コンテンツの示し方としてはまだ議論の余地があるのかも知れないが、DCメタデータ記述の参考としては有益だと思う。
